CIPC Notice 37 of 2024: Foreigner assurance service

Published 30 May 2024

The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) emphasizes the need for accurate details of foreign nationals on the Foreigner Assurance platform.

Correctly capturing this information is vital for maintaining the integrity of the company registry and ensuring compliance with security measures and public regulations. This is particularly important for verifying the eligibility of directors and members to prevent involvement in illegal activities. While the new verification process may present challenges, it aligns with international standards for identity and nationality validation.

This notice addresses common issues with the Foreigner Assurance process to improve efficiency:

Country Selection: Choose the country that issued the passport or ID document, not the nationality. For British documents, select the specific territory.
Attachment Limits: Only one document (passport/ID) can be uploaded per submission.
Names: Use full names as listed on the passport or ID; do not add maiden names.
Expiration Dates: Include the expiration date if the passport has one.
South African IDs: Foreign nationals with South African IDs do not need to use this service.
Document Details: Use numbers, not letters, for passport numbers. Certified copies must meet CIPC requirements.
Translations: Provide English translations for non-English certifications.
Correction Requests: Send correction requests to enqforeignerassurance@cipc.co.za rather than submitting multiple applications.
Processing Improvements: CIPC is working on improving the handling of notarised and certified documents.
